Adults typically organize the Relay for Life events. This year, students at Armwood High School in Seffner are taking charge to remember loved ones lost to cancer and honor those fighting the disease.

Ashley Johns, 16, a junior at Armwood High, said the students took on the task of organizing the American Cancer Society’s major annual fundraising event.

She is the community liaison for Armwood’s Relay For Life.

“Strong, developed student leaders are working together as a team on a job typically designated for adults,” she said. “In past years, we have had a lack of motivation, spirit, leadership and overall participation. This year, our committee is passionate, persistent and ready to tackle any obstacles head on. As a key club team, we have already raised $700 for the event.”

Though Key Club’s goal is $1,000, the overall fundraising event goal for Armwood is $10,000, according to Johns.

The Armwood Relay For Life event takes place from 6 p.m. to midnight on May 7 at Armwood High, 12000 US 92, Seffner.

Similar events will take place throughout the area in April and May. The Relay For Life of Brandon is April 23 at noon at the Brandon High School track, 1101 Victoria Street in Brandon.

The 2016 theme for the Relay for Life of Brandon is “All we want for the holidays is a cure.”

People may dedicate luminaria tribute bags, which are paper bags containing votive candles, for loved ones.

Johns said the deadline to create a team for Armwood is April 24.

“We are looking for as many teams as possible,” she said. “Right now, we have about 15 teams and would like to double that by the time of the relay.”

She said the students are hosting a survivors’ dinner and luminaria walk.

“I helped to promote and fundraise for last year,” Johns said. “My reason to volunteer in the Relay for Life is my papa, John Johns Sr., passed away from a relapse in kidney cancer when I was little. My family has a long history of battling (cancer) and I don’t want to lose anyone else over cancer.”
