CHANNELSIDE — Leslie Jeffery considers herself a solitary painter — she even loves to paint alone.

Although she does not plan an opening reception for her upcoming solo art show, “Go Big, Go Bold, she will arrange a “meet and greet” lunch sometime during the exhibit dates from April 7 through May 5.

The art exhibit is at Bamboozle Tea Lounge, 109 N. 12th St. in Tampa’s Channelside District.

Jeffery said her paintings convey energy and a mood whether it’s serious or lighthearted.

“I find the painting process exhilarating” she said. “I feel successful when I believe the last painting is my best one.”

Jeffery received her degree in art education and constructive design from Florida State University. Her grandmother, Olivia Whitaker, inspired her to become an artist at an early age.

She said her favorite art piece that will be part of the upcoming show is an abstract piece titled, “Lost in the Moment.”

“I love the depth and feel and texture of it,” Jeffery said.

Jeffery said she gets a positive reaction from people who view her abstract art.

“They love it,” she said. “A lot of people tell me they don’t really care for abstract art, but they like my abstract art.”

Tim Gibbons of Seminole Heights, an art instructor, said he puts a call out to artists like Jeffery who want to show their work at the Bamboozle Café.

He loved the art that Jeffery has done.

“She is part of Las Damas de Arte, which is a women’s organization of painters that have a cool art show every year,” Gibbons said. “She is known around Tampa. She is more into abstract, which is really cool.”

As part of the Las Damas de Arte group, Jeffery helps raise money for art scholarships.

Jayne Lisbeth, who is married to Gibbons, said Jeffery had her work most recently juried into the “Chaos” show, where two of her paintings will be exhibited May 7 through June 25 in the ARC Gallery in San Francisco, California. She is also a member of Florida Artists Group, TESA (The Exhibiting Society of Artists), PAVA (Professional Association of Visual Artists), ISAP (The International Society of Acrylic Painters).

“Leslie is a prolific artist,” Lisbeth said. “Her art represents the realistic and the abstract in her colorful and thoughtful paintings. Her art features texture, light, marks of all kinds, deep colors, patterned backgrounds, drips and various mediums.”

The event is free and open to the public.
