BRANDON — When Thom Schultz of Brandon put up the Facebook event page for the first Tampa Bay Coffee & Art Festival, he didn’t realize it would go viral.

Schultz, the director of DC Noise company, said the Facebook page “blew up” with interest in the event taking place on April 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Noise Box, 1310 John Moore Road, Brandon.

“We weren’t expecting that,” he said. “We got thousands of people interested in the event. We ended up having to figure out how we are going to accommodate the interest for it. It’s perfect timing because Tampa Bay has become a huge hot spot for craft coffee. The next thing needed was the coffee festival.”

This year’s venue is a facility owned by Christ Community Church. He is already planning to secure a larger venue for next year’s event to have room for the interest of local coffee connoisseurs.

This year’s event will help raise money for the Bay Area Foundation for the Arts (BAFA).

A group of local pianists will provide the entertainment. Local musicians include Kathy Schultz, Hannah Whitemore, Abby Whitemore, Haily Taylor and Brian Watkins. Featured artists are Starry Nights Media, Love Offering, Macy Eats Paint, Susan Overbo, Saramics, Epsilon III Ladies, Pink Zebra, Kathryn Heckenbach, Summer Rea Art, SKP, and Schultz Wands.

“Craft coffee is similar to the same concept as craft beer,” he said. “It’s small batches done by hand. People are buzzing about coffee.”

He said the event will feature coffee tastings, demonstrations and information sessions. The coffee will be provided by Zeal. Baked goods will also be available.

“This is our first time doing the coffee event,” Schultz. “We thought it would be cool to bring people around coffee, music and art.”

The cost for pre-ordered entry package is $10, which includes entry, free mug, free event T-shirt, free TB-CAF pen and notebook for tasting notes.

A portion of the proceeds will be going to BAFA, a start-up organization dedicated to furthering fine and performing arts in the area by providing scholarships for students and teachers.

Cost of tickets is $15 at the door and includes free pen and notebook.

Since space is limited, walk-ups may not be guaranteed entry, he said.
