DOWNTOWN – Colene Milligan often says she sings in colors. People who view her art might think they hear the canvas speak to them as she brings an auditory element to the art experience.

Milligan will show her art work at Bamboozle Cafe, 516 N. Tampa, Street, Tampa, from March 26 through April 23. She said she has a great love for music, which is evident in her multi-media pieces.

“Without hesitation, my most cherished painting is ‘Acoustic Waves,’” she said. “I put a piece of my heart in each piece, and this one is an image of its melody.”

Jayne Lisbeth of Seminole Heights said Milligan has exhibited all over California, North Caroline and Florida. Lisbeth said Milligan is known as “Sweet Colene” in the art world.

Lisbeth is helping to coordinate the opening for Milligan’s one-woman show “Splash of Art,” on March 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Bamboozle Café.

“We’re very impressed with her art and love her ocean series and her obvious interest in the environment,” Lisbeth said.

Lisbeth said Milligan’s work shows her interests and background in anatomical representations, the environment, sea life, landscapes and the female form.

As far as where she grew up, Milligan has a difficult time identifying one state. Her family moved frequently, which took her to Pennsylvania, New Jersey, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Maryland, West Virginia and California.

“I pride myself in having lived by the beach, in a swamp, on a mountain, in a valley, in a desert, by a river, and within a thriving city – and most certainly apply stark memories to canvas,” Milligan said.

Milligan, who is a full-time artist, said she likes to see the reaction people have to her art. She wants to inspire thoughts, feelings, and stir up memories or dreams when people view it.

“It is abundantly clear that a piece of art is a fleeting image unless the observer chooses to linger and learn,” she said. “I can tell at gallery openings, live painting events, or at street fairs I vend at the viewers who are really feeling my art. It is when the light of their eyes glimmer as a connection is made. Nothing is more rewarding than bearing witness to this as an artist, in my opinion – the moment of impact when a stranger is thankful for your creation.”

Milligan said she primarily works with acrylic and oil as well as spray paint. She uses multi-media canvases including wood and vinyl.

“I’m excited to bring my unique color palette to Bamboozle and share the things I’ve made with a new crowd,” Milligan said.

Bamboozle Cafe is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and is closed on Sundays. For information on the art exhibits at Bamboozle, call (813) 231-2579.
