BRANDON — In life, you always deserve a second chance.

After rain spoiled their annual pig roast fundraiser for the first time in 10 years, members of the Nam Knights MC Westside Chapter plan a “Take 2” event with brats, beer and live music.

Gregg Wyckoff of Fishhawk Ranch, a Vietnam-era veteran who has been a member of the club for a decade, said the club’s pig roast make-up event will take place May 7 at Fox and Hounds British Pub, 229 E. Brandon Blvd., Brandon. They will serve brats outside from 5 to 8 p.m.

The Carlos Dangers Band performs from 8 p.m. to midnight.

“The pig roast on April 2 was pretty much a wash-out thanks to the all-day rain,” Wyckoff said. “We persevered and still made a little money though not what we were aiming for.”

Todd Harr of Fishhawk Ranch, president of the Nam Knights MC Westside Chapter, said the group of motorcycle riders raised about $9,000 to help Haley House fund and the Lynn Sowers Memorial Foundation, Inc., but their goal was $20,000.

Last year, they raised $18,000 through the annual pig roast.

As part of the Fox and Hounds charity event, they plan to wash motorcycles.

Harr, an Army sergeant major who retired in 2014, served in the military for 25 years. Originally from Peoria, Ill., his career included seven deployments.

“The club is a family because it’s a group of men with like characteristics,” Harr said. “We enjoy the (motorcycle) riding and the freedom that comes with it. We enjoy the brotherhood that you have when you serve in the military or with law enforcement. In both of these professions you get such camaraderie amongst your peers. It keeps that going. It is what motivated me and most of the other men to be a part of the group.”

In the past 10 years, the group raised almost $130,000 for the Haley House fund and the Lynn Sowers Memorial Foundation, Inc. They also helped every day veterans, including one who had his motorcycle stolen.

After the veteran’s motorcycle was recovered, the group restored the condition of the motorcycle to “better than new” before presenting it back to the man.

“We share the same hobbies but we are giving back to two groups of people who are near and dear to our heart because it’s where we come from,” Harr said. “We give back to the veterans and law enforcement in our community.”
